Scouts collect 'a ton' of food
1. January 2010 by atingley.
GREG AGNEW/TIMES & TRANSCRIPT
It’s hard to believe, but just 30 Moncton area scouts, cubs and beavers have gathered more than a ton of pasta, pasta sauce and canned meat for a Moncton food bank.
Members of First Moncton-St George’s Scouting spent five weeks collecting for the food bank.
The kids from First Moncton-St. George’s Scouting spent just five weeks canvassing families, friends and the congregation at St. George’s Anglican to come up with 2,534 pounds (1,150 kg) of food, which works out to 38 kilograms (84.5 lbs.) per scout.
The foodstuffs will go to the YMCA Reconnect’s food bank.
The local scouts were one of three scout organizations in the region to pick up the cross-Canada challenge issued by a scout leader in Pickering, Ontario.
Allen Urquhart, a scout leader with First Moncton-St.George’s Scouting, said he learned about the Pickering challenge and immediately realized the potential for the Metro area.
He accepted the challenge on behalf of the St. George’s scouts and issued it to others in the region, but as far as he knows, no one has been as successful yet.
Saying how proud he was of the kids, he said, “there’s no prizes, no trophy, just bragging rights.”
Meanwhile, the success and the help it will bring at what is a particularly difficult time of year for area food banks has inspired the scouts to dream bigger.
“We’re seriously thinking of doing this again next year and making it an annual campaign.”

Survival Kit Contest
21. October 2009 by Scouter Jason.
Just a short note about our recent survival kit contest that we had at 1st Moncton. As part of their BP Woodsman requirements they Scouts had to construct a Survival/Emergency Kit. We decided to make it into a contest with the winner and runner up receiving a prize.
The Scouts were given 2 weeks to create a survival Kit and told to be innovative and creative in their construction. This past Tuesday (Oct 20th) was the deadline and all but one Scout brought them in. Judging was carried out by former 1st Moncton scout Trevor Goodwin.
While all the scouts had good survival kits there was very little innovating creativity most of the scouts just followed the list that was posted here in an earlier blog post without going above and beyond the basic requirements so to speak. There were however 2 Kits that stood out and Trevor judged to be the winners.
Josh Pellerin came in second place with his inclusion of water purification tablets. His prize was a small sewing kit donated by Ron Goodwin and an Emergency Survival Blanket from Mountain Equipment Co-op
First Prize went to scout Sadie Shaban who won with her inclusions of a small survival pouch with instruction on how to overcome the fear and anxiety that usually accompany ones realization of being lost in the woods. One of the most important things to remember when lost in the woods is to keep your wits about you. and having something that you can read over and that will tell you how to keep cool and what to do. Trevor decided that this was an Item that would greatly increase your chances of survival and It was something that no one else had. Sadie won a Gerber Sheath knife from Mountain Equipment Co-op
Congratulations to the Scouts who won! Look for a post about the Scouts adventures at the Annual Star Trek competition this weekend (23-25)

Beginning of another Scouting year
21. September 2009 by Scouter Jason.
Well, 2 more days till a new Scouting year starts again. after a fairly quiet registration night, I’m hoping that the returning Scouts and Cubs will be showing up on Tuesday night to re register. If all goes well we will have 13 scouts this year. Enough for 2 and maybe even 3 patrols. Its looking up to be a good year. September and October will be busy months for the kids(and leaders) with 3 weekends on October already booked with apple day, a day camp and the Annual Star Trek competition the weekend of the 24th. Looking forward to a great year!

Survival Kit, a quick how-to.
30. August 2009 by Scouter Jason.
A good woodsman always carries a good hunting knife, waterproof matches a compass and map and a small first aid kit for minor cuts and scrapes and this is usually enough for most excursions into the wilderness. However, anything can happen and a good Scout should be prepared with a good survival kit in case an emergency situation arises.
Suggested Items a basic kit should contain are:
Some Emergency food(boullion, sugar cubes energy bars etc)
Matches-waterproofed, compass, razor blades
25lb test fishing line-nylon
Fish hooks, spinners, weights and lures
2 to 4m of snare wire.
Adhesive tape(ducktape)
Small personal first aid kit(bandages, alcohol pads, gauze medical tape etc)
Pencil and paper, emergency blanket(space blanket)
2 large sheets of aluminium foil(for cooking and making utensils)
1 or 2 small mirrors for signalling
Halazone tablets for purifying water.
Whistle, compass, small jack or swiss army knife.
These all should be in a sealable container or fanny pack of some type and placed in your pack so its always there and never used unless its needed!

The Website is paying off!!
27. August 2009 by Scouter Jason.
Had a call tonight from a parent who was interested in having her son join scouts. She told me that she had gotten my number from the website of www.1stmonctonscouts.com, I was curious as to how she found the website and she told me she just simply did a search on Google for Moncton, NB Scouting and our site was one of the top picks that came up! (I knew it would pay to register the site with all those search engines)
She said that the site was well laid out, and was extremely impressed with all the available forms and information on scouting on it and that it was very informative and easy to navigate, Its good to know that our website can be found so easily and that a parent finds it so easy to navigate and use. I’m confident that this new tool will be a great boon to recruiting!

This Blog, Will be a repository for the Adventures and expeditions of St. George’s Scout Troop. A place where the leaders and youth can share their thoughts and experiences as well as a place for posting info for parents. Tips on camping and other scout activities, and anything else that’s relevant to the Scouting program.
So parents, scouts and visitors, feel free to post your Ideas, thought and comments on here. without everyone’s help this’ will be a pretty boring blog. If you’d like to be an Author or a contributor please contact me (the ADMIN) at: goodwin.jason@1stmonctonscouts.com
